PROJECT OVERVIEW
Burning of leftover crops is a major environmental problem in northern India, causing serious air pollution in Uttar Pradesh during each harvest season. At the same time, India’s need for gas and reliance on imports creates an energy security issue. The Akaia Green Fuels plant helps tackle both of the problems.
By sourcing paddy straw from local farmers and press mud from sugar mills, and converting these through anaerobic digestion, the plant produces pipeline-grade biogas that is injected directly into India’s city gas distribution network.
The facility is located at Bhamauri village, Tilhar Tehsil, Shahjahanpur District, Uttar Pradesh. The 33.35-acre site comprises flat agricultural land with natural drainage features and no significant undulations. The site meets AGF’s internal land procurement criteria and is accessible via NH-730C.

Technology
The plant uses anaerobic digestion and biogas purification to process around 94,000 tonnes of waste annually, producing about 20 TPD of CBG with over 90% methane content, comparable to CNG standards. Press mud is converted into bio-CNG and Fermented Organic Manure (FOM), which can be used as an organic fertilizer to improve soil health.
Around 13.3 TPD of purified CO₂ will also be recovered, packaged, and sold for use in industries such as carbonated beverage manufacturing. The plant is designed as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility, with wastewater reused within plant operations to reduce environmental impacts.
